Springbok Squad commemorate Nelson Mandela

The Springboks will be wearing their Springbok Madiba Classic Presidential Shirt during the build-up to the Centenary Match against Australia. The match, which takes place in Port Elizabeth on September 29th, will be played as a tribute to Nelson Mandela to mark what would have been his centenary year of birth.

The Presidential team had the honour of fitting the whole Springbok squad including staff and management in the shirt (an interesting exercise for our tailor who had never quite encountered such measurements before!). The team have been an absolute pleasure to work with. Photographed here were Aphiwe Dyanti, Captain Siya Kolisi, Handre Pollard and Elton Jaantjies.

The Springbok Madiba Shirt is a green and gold adaptation of an original print worn by Nelson Mandela in grey and in olive. The shirts were originally designed by Desre Buirski from 1994 and this particular style was and first worn in February 1997 by President Mandela when meeting US Vice President, Mr Al Gore, at Genadendal in Cape Town.

These limited edition shirts are made from 100% soft cotton with a silky finish. The intricate and artistic design is symmetrically placed and matched at every seam. The multiple Springboks, subtly embedded in the design will make this item a unique collector’s piece for many fans.

The Springboks Sevens & Seven’s Women’s team wore their Springbok Madiba Shirts at the opening ceremony of the Sevens Rugby World Cup in July. Click here for more.

The shirt has been made at the Presidential Group’s clothing factory in Gardens, Cape Town and is available to buy from our stores or online.
